Brine Pool

A brine pool is a lake beneath the sea. The water inside is so salty and heavy that it does not mix with the seawater around it and actually forms its own surface. Animals that fall in cannot survive.
For scientists
The brine forms where salt from ancient oceans, buried under the seafloor, dissolves; the water becomes so dense it stays put as its own lake with shorelines. Methane often seeps up there too, feeding specialized bacteria. Dense beds of mussels ring the deadly salty pool, living off the methane through their symbionts.
