Barracuda
Depth: 100 m · Sunlight Zone
The barracuda is a lightning-fast ambush hunter with a mouth full of sharp teeth. Its silvery body shimmers like a mirror. It often hangs almost motionless in the water and then shoots suddenly at its prey.
For scientists
The barracuda hunts by sight and in sprints: from a standstill it briefly accelerates to over 40 km/h and tears chunks from its prey with dagger-like teeth. The young live in mangroves and seagrass, the adults often alone on the reef. Its mirror-like body makes it hard to see in open water.
