The grouper is a powerful reef fish that sucks in its prey with a sudden gulp. Some species grow huge and very old. It can change color and sometimes hunts together with the moray eel.
For scientists
Groupers create a strong suction by flaring open the mouth cavity in a flash, drawing prey in whole. Many are protogynous hermaphrodites: they start as females and later become males. Some cooperate with moray eels to hunt, signaling the location of hidden prey with body movements.
