Krill are small crustaceans, barely as long as your finger, yet they form the largest swarms on Earth. Huge red clouds of krill feed whales, seals and penguins. That makes these tiny animals one of the most important links in the ocean food chain.
For scientists
Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), with an estimated total mass of several hundred million tons, is one of the most abundant animal species on Earth. The swarms migrate up and down through the water column every day and graze algae from the underside of the pack ice; their sinking droppings carry carbon down into the deep (the biological pump). As a central link, krill feed baleen whales, seals, penguins and fish, which makes them a keystone species of the Southern Ocean.
