Jellyfish
Depth: 500 m · Twilight Zone
Jellyfish are made of almost nothing but water and have no heart or brain. They catch small prey with their long tentacles and drift gently through the sea on the current.
For scientists
Jellyfish are about 95 percent water and steer their bell with a simple nerve net rather than a brain. Many deep-sea jellyfish glow blue: in a chemical reaction the molecule coelenterazine gives off light, often as an alarm or a lure. Their stinging cells fire tiny venom-tipped harpoons on contact to stun prey.
