Mauna Kea

Measured from its base on the seafloor to its peak, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain on Earth at about 10,200 meters. That makes it taller than Mount Everest. Most of it is underwater though, with only the very top sticking out as an island.

Mauna Kea is a shield volcano: thin, runny lava flowed out flat over thousands of years and built a broad, gentle dome rather than a steep peak. Its weight presses down into the ocean crust (isostasy), so its true base sits deep below the seafloor. Measured from there to the summit, it stands taller than Mount Everest does above sea level.
