Mantis shrimp
Depth: 20 m · Sunlight Zone
The mantis shrimp has the fastest strike in the entire animal kingdom. With its clubs it hits in a flash and can even crack open the hard shells of snails. Its eyes are among the most amazing in the world and see colors we cannot even imagine.
For scientists
Mantis shrimps (Stomatopoda) deliver one of the fastest known strikes in the animal kingdom with their club-shaped raptorial limbs; the blow is so fast that cavitation forms short-lived bubbles whose collapse adds a second strike and a flash of light. Their compound eyes have up to sixteen types of color receptor (we have three) and also detect polarized light. The strike is strong enough to break shells and even aquarium glass.
