The sailfish is one of the fastest fish in the sea and shoots through the water in short, very fast bursts. It raises its huge dorsal fin like a sail to herd and startle schools of prey fish. With its long pointed bill it taps and stuns them before snapping them up.
For scientists
The sailfish (Istiophorus) is among the fastest fish; short bursts of over 100 km/h are often cited, though newer studies suggest lower figures. The greatly enlarged dorsal fin (the sail) is raised during cooperative hunting to herd and confuse schools of sardines. Like its relatives among the billfish it keeps its brain and eyes warmer than the surrounding water through a special heat-exchange network.
