Sea Anemone
Depth: 25 m · Sunlight Zone
The sea anemone looks like a flower but is actually an animal. It catches small prey with its tentacles. Clownfish live safely among the tentacles without being stung.
For scientists
The sea anemone is a cnidarian, related to jellyfish and corals; its tentacles hold stinging capsules that fire venom-tipped threads on contact. It can live a very long time, with some individuals thought to be over a hundred years old. Like corals, many anemones host algae in their tissue and gain extra energy from light.
