Abyssal hills are gentle mounds of solidified lava that formed at the mid-ocean ridge. They cover more than a third of the seafloor and are the most common landform on Earth. As they age, fine sediment slowly buries them until only a flat plain remains.

Abyssal hills form right at the ridge, when the young crust is stretched and breaks into long, ridge-parallel blocks. They are the most common landform on Earth and cover much of the seafloor. As they age, fine sediment sifts over them and gradually smooths the landscape into the abyssal plain.
