The beluga whale is snow-white and has a round forehead it uses to shape sounds. Because it chirps and whistles so much, it is also called the canary of the sea. Unlike most whales it can turn its head and pull faces.
For scientists
The beluga whale (Delphinapterus leucas) has a deformable melon of fatty tissue with which it focuses its echolocation clicks, visibly changing the shape of its forehead. Instead of a dorsal fin it has only a firm ridge, which makes swimming under pack ice easier. Unfused neck vertebrae let it turn its head.
