The Bismarck was one of the largest warships of its era and sank in 1941. On the way down it struck an extinct underwater volcano and slid along its slope. Today the wreck sits nearly 4,800 meters deep in the Atlantic, and was not found until 1989.

The Bismarck sank in 1941 after a long chase; whether by gunfire or by the crew scuttling her is still debated. Robert Ballard found the wreck in 1989 nearly 4,800 m deep, remarkably intact because on its way down it struck an extinct undersea volcano and slid along its slope. As a war grave the site is treated with respect.
