The eagle ray glides through the water on its broad wings like a bird through the air. Its back is patterned with pale spots. With its flat mouth it cracks open clams and crabs on the bottom.
For scientists
Eagle rays beat their pectoral fins like wings and swim actively in open water rather than lying on the bottom. With plate-like fused teeth they crush clams and snails. Some leap far out of the water, probably for courtship or to shake off parasites; they bear only a few, well-developed young.
