Electric ray

Depth: 90 m · Sunlight Zone

The electric ray can deliver electric shocks. Inside its round body sit organs like little batteries, which it uses to stun prey or scare off enemies. By day it often lies hidden in the sand and waits.

For scientists

The electric ray generates voltage pulses of a few dozen volts in paired organs made of modified muscle, in order to stun prey. The stacks of thousands of jelly-filled cells (electrocytes) act like batteries wired in series. In antiquity people laid the animals on the body to ease pain.
