Endurance

Depth: 3,008 m · Midnight Zone

The Endurance was the ship of polar explorer Shackleton. In 1915 it was crushed by ice and sank. It was not until 2022 that the wreck was found at 3,008 meters depth, and in the icy water it is remarkably well preserved.

For scientists

The Endurance lies in the icy, oxygen-poor depth of the Weddell Sea, where there are no wood-eating shipworms, which is why the timber is remarkably well preserved after over a hundred years. In 2022 a team of underwater robots found the wreck at 3,008 m, just a few kilometers from Shackleton last recorded position. As a protected historic site it may not be touched.
