The Humboldt squid is a large, powerful squid that hunts in shoals. While hunting it flickers red and white across its skin, almost like flashing. With two long feeding arms it grabs prey and tears it apart with its sharp beak. Divers call it the red devil.

The Humboldt squid (Dosidicus gigas) hunts in large, coordinated shoals and communicates through rapid color changes (red-and-white flickering) of its chromatophores. It favors the oxygen-poor midwater layer and makes daily vertical migrations; with suckers ringed by tiny teeth and a horny beak it is a formidable predator. It grows extremely fast and usually lives only one to two years.
