Humpback Whale
Depth: 850 m · Twilight Zone
The humpback whale is a gentle giant that sings long songs carrying kilometers through the water. It has to come up for air because, like us, it is a mammal.
For scientists
Humpback whales filter tiny crustaceans and fish from the water with baleen made of keratin (like our fingernails). Only the males sing, and every whale in a region sings the same slowly changing song, almost like a culture. To feed they blow a curtain of bubbles up from the deep that herds fish into a tight ball.
