The mako shark is the fastest shark in the world and can leap out of the water in a flash. Like its relatives it keeps its body warm and so stays powerful. Its body is perfectly streamlined, almost like a rocket.
For scientists
The shortfin mako (Isurus oxyrinchus) reaches over 70 km/h in a sprint, making it the fastest shark. Like all mackerel sharks it is regionally endothermic. Its skin carries tiny, movable tooth-scales that suppress turbulence and reduce drag. The young grow in the womb by egg cannibalism.
