Ocean sunfish
Depth: 200 m · Twilight Zone
The ocean sunfish is the heaviest bony fish in the world and looks like a giant swimming head. Sometimes it lies flat at the surface to warm up in the sun and let birds clean it. Its favorite food is jellyfish.
For scientists
Mola mola has no true tail fin; it steers with a folded frill called the clavus and sculls with its tall dorsal and anal fins like wings. A single female can release several hundred million eggs, more than any other vertebrate. After deep, cold dives into the jellyfish layer it rewarms at the surface to keep its metabolism running.
