Trieste

Depth: 10,900 m · Hadal Zone

The Trieste was a very special submarine. In 1960 it carried the first two humans all the way to the bottom of the Challenger Deep. It was more than 50 years before anyone managed to do it again.

For scientists

The Trieste was a bathyscaphe: a float full of light gasoline carried it like a balloon, while iron pellets served as droppable ballast to control the descent. In 1960 it took Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh to the bottom of the Challenger Deep in under 5 hours. A window cracked on the way down, but they pressed on; not until 2012, with James Cameron, did a human dive that deep again.
