Titanic – Stern and Debris Field

After the ship broke apart, the stern tumbled down and was crushed when it hit the seafloor. Boilers, steel plates and many smaller pieces lie scattered across the roughly 600-metre debris field between the stern and the bow.

For scientists

The stern descended differently from the streamlined bow: it rotated, imploded and struck the seabed with great force. Its decks folded together, while heavy boilers and machinery broke loose and now help researchers reconstruct the final minutes of the sinking.
