The Tonga Trench is the second deepest trench on Earth. Its deepest point is called Horizon Deep and sits more than 10,800 meters down. Here one tectonic plate dives beneath another especially fast.

In the Tonga Trench the Pacific Plate dives at over 20 cm per year, one of the fastest subductions on Earth. Its deepest point, Horizon Deep, sits about 10,800 m down and is the second deepest point of the oceans after the Challenger Deep. The fast, cold plate triggers especially deep earthquakes here, down to about 700 km.
