Penguin
Depth: 30 m · Sunlight Zone
Penguins cannot fly, but underwater they are lightning fast, shooting through the sea with their wings like little torpedoes. A dense layer of feathers keeps them warm in the icy water. On land they waddle, but in the water they are elegant hunters.
For scientists
Penguins have evolved their wings into stiff flippers and literally fly through the water; their dense, heavy bones make diving easier. A gland above the eye excretes excess salt. Tightly packed, oiled feathers trap an insulating layer of air that keeps them warm.
