Squirrelfish
Depth: 60 m · Sunlight Zone
The squirrelfish has huge eyes, because it is active at night and hides in caves and crevices by day. Its bright red coat looks almost black in the deep and hides it. It can even growl and click to communicate.
For scientists
Squirrelfish and soldierfish (Holocentridae) are nocturnal; their very large eyes with a reflective layer (tapetum lucidum) gather the little available light. With the swim bladder and special muscles they produce clicks and grunts to communicate and deter rivals. Their red color appears black in the deep and hides them.
