Sperm Whale
Depth: 2,100 m · Midnight Zone
The sperm whale is a true deep diver. It can dive more than 2,000 meters and hold its breath for over an hour. Down there it hunts mostly squid.
For scientists
The sperm whale hunts by echolocation: inside its huge head the spermaceti organ produces the loudest clicks in the animal kingdom and focuses them like a lens. To dive it slows its heartbeat and lets its lungs and ribs collapse to save oxygen. Its stomach has been found full of giant squid beaks, with sucker scars marking its skin.
