The stingray glides flat over the sandy bottom and often buries itself until only its eyes show. On its tail it carries a sharp venomous barb, which it uses only to defend itself. With the flat mouth on its underside it cracks open shells.
For scientists
The stingray breathes through spiracles behind its eyes, so that when buried in sand it does not have to draw sandy water through the gills on its underside. The tail barb is a modified tooth with backward hooks and a venom groove, purely defensive. With electroreceptors it locates prey hidden in the sand.
