Thresher shark

Depth: 300 m · Twilight Zone

The thresher shark has a tail as long as its whole body. It whips it through the water to stun entire schools of fish before eating them. Its large eyes help it hunt at dusk.

For scientists

The thresher shark (Alopias) actively uses its greatly elongated upper tail lobe as a weapon: with a lightning-fast strike over its head it stuns fish in a school. It too keeps its eye and muscle region warm through a wonder-net. Its large eyes are adapted to the dim light of deeper water.
