Swordfish

Depth: 550 m · Twilight Zone

The swordfish hunts at lightning speed with its long, flat bill. It is one of the fastest fish in the ocean and can swim in bursts of around 90 kilometers per hour.

For scientists

The swordfish warms its brain and eyes with a special muscle, so it stays lightning-fast and sharp-sighted even in cold deep water. It uses its long, flat bill to slash into a school of fish and gather up the stunned prey. As a juvenile it still has teeth and scales, which it loses as an adult.
