The Titanic was a huge passenger ship that sank in 1912 after hitting an iceberg. Today the wreck rests about 3,800 meters deep at the foot of the continental slope, broken into two large pieces. The bow and stern lie around 600 meters apart.
For scientists
The Titanic broke apart as it sank, because the flooded bow and stern grew too heavy for the midsection to hold. On the wreck, iron-eating bacteria slowly consume the hull and build rusticles, icicle-shaped rust formations that trickle down from the steel. Researchers estimate the wreck will largely collapse in on itself within a few decades.
