Seals are playful swimmers and graceful divers, but rather clumsy on land. They hold their breath for a long time underwater and hunt fish.
For scientists
Seals breathe out before diving and store oxygen mainly in their blood and muscles rather than their lungs; their heartbeat drops sharply. Their sensitive whiskers sense the wake a fish leaves in the water, even in total darkness. A thick layer of blubber keeps them warm in the cold water.
