Sharks have been around longer than the dinosaurs, for over 400 million years. With their keen sense of smell they can detect prey from far away and help keep the ocean healthy.
For scientists
Sharks have a skeleton of cartilage instead of bone, which keeps them light and agile. With the ampullae of Lorenzini, tiny pores on the snout, they sense the faint electric fields of prey even when it is hidden in the sand. Their skin is covered in tooth-like scales that reduce drag and let them move almost silently.
